Understanding Jesus’ Parables in Every Season

Jesus often spoke in parables – simple on the surface, yet full of deep meaning. In books like the Gospel of Matthew, especially chapter 13, He explained that parables both reveal truth and hide it. Some people would understand while others would not.

Even His closest followers, like the Apostles Peter and John, often asked Him to explain what He meant. This reminds us of something important: it is okay not to understand everything right away. Faith is a journey, and learning takes time.

Today, many believers still read these parables and wonder what they mean. And sometimes, the meaning feels different depending on where we are in life. A story that once felt simple may suddenly speak deeply to us in a new season. This is one of the beautiful ways God works – His Word meets us where we are.

But there is also wisdom in remembering that these parables were first spoken in a real time and place. Jesus spoke to people living in a different culture, with different daily experiences. They didn’t have direct access to God (which Jesus changed with His sacrifice for us) Learning about that time and the way people understood scripture and faith can help us better understand what Jesus was saying. It keeps us grounded, so we don’t lose the heart of His message.

Jesus is not only our Savior – He is also our teacher. In the Gospel of John, we see Him revealing truth, showing people how to live, how to love, and how to trust God fully. His words wasn’t only for that time, but also for how we live today.

So as we read His parables, we can hold two things together. We can ask, “What did this mean when Jesus first spoke it?” and also, “What is God saying to me through these teachings today?”

When we do this, the stories begin to come alive. They are no longer just words on a page – they become a guide for our hearts, shaping our faith, our choices, and our daily walk with God.

“The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?” He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: “ ‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.
