“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”

For a long time, I struggled to understand what James meant when he wrote these words. How can anyone be joyful when trials come? Difficult circumstances are painful, discouraging, exhausting, and sometimes just downright frustrating.
When I became a born-again Christian nearly two years ago, it was the first time I truly felt I could hear the Holy Spirit clearly in my life. Throughout the years, I had made many commitments to my faith, but as life unfolded and circumstances changed, I often found myself slipping into despair, anxiety, depression, and spiritual fatigue. Gratitude during difficult seasons was the furthest thing from my mind.
Over the last few years, as I intentionally sought the Lord and grew in my relationship with Jesus, I found myself facing one challenge after another. I struggled to understand why I had been saved only to experience even greater trials than before. For months, my prayers were filled with lament. I complained to God about the difficulties I was facing and questioned why these struggles seemed never-ending.
Then, during a conversation with a Christian friend, she spoke a simple truth that pierced through my frustration: “You are being refined by the Holy Spirit, and what a blessing it is that you are going through this.”
In that moment, I was reminded of this verse:
“And yet, O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, and you are the potter. We all are formed by your hand.”

Suddenly, the penny dropped.
All of Jesus’ apostles endured unimaginable suffering, persecution, and hardship. Yet God used those very trials to refine them and prepare them for their ministries. Their endurance became the foundation of their faithfulness, and they remained steadfast until the very end.
As I now look back on what has been one of the most stressful, unpredictable, and challenging seasons of my life, I can see that the Lord was giving me something precious: patient endurance.
Instead of complaining, I gradually began to rejoice and thank God for the work He was doing in me. I started to recognise that every difficulty was an opportunity for Him to shape my character and draw me closer to Him.
In moments when I should have been utterly exhausted, I experienced supernatural strength, courage, and energy.
In moments when overwhelm and despair threatened to consume me, I found His presence sustaining me and carrying me through.
Looking back, I can now see that these trials were never meant to break me. They were meant to prepare me. God was developing endurance within me, deepening my faith, shaping my character, and teaching me to depend on Him completely.
James encourages us to consider trials an opportunity for joy, not because suffering is enjoyable, but because we know that God is using it to accomplish something greater within us. Endurance is forged in hardship, and through that process, the Lord prepares us for the future He has planned.
Today, I thank God not only for the blessings in my life, but also for the refining seasons that have drawn me closer to Him. What once felt like a burden, I now recognise as evidence of His loving hand at work. The Potter was shaping the clay all along, moulding me into the person He created me to be.
The trials may not have been easy, but through them God taught me one of the most valuable lessons of all: patient endurance. And through that endurance, He continues to prepare me for His purposes and the future He has ordained.

Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your faithfulness in every season of life. Thank You not only for the blessings that bring joy, but also for the trials that shape us into the people You have called us to be.
Lord, when difficulties arise, help us to see them through Your eyes. Give us the grace to trust that You are at work even when we cannot understand what You are doing.
Teach us to remain steadfast when our faith is tested, knowing that You are developing endurance within us and preparing us for Your purposes.
Forgive us for the times we have complained, doubted, or grown weary. Strengthen us by Your Holy Spirit when we feel weak, discouraged, or overwhelmed. Remind us that we are the clay and You are the Potter, lovingly moulding and refining us according to Your perfect will.
Help us to find joy in the knowledge that every challenge, every delay, and every hardship is not wasted in Your hands. Deepen our faith, refine our character, and draw us closer to Jesus each day.
May we learn to depend on You completely and walk forward with courage, patience, and unwavering trust. As we endure, may our lives bring glory to You and become a testimony of Your goodness and sustaining grace.
We thank You for never leaving us, never forsaking us, and for carrying us through every season. Continue Your work in us until we become all that You have created us to be.
